St. Augustine Pt. 3

Sister Morrow ft. a cool house (don't worry no one lived there)

Hello everyone!!

We have transfers this week and sadly I will be saying goodbye to my amazing trainer Sister F :((She is headed to JAX West to be a Sister Training Leader (in charge of all the sister missionaries in that zone) I know she's going to be amazing but I wish I could keep her one more transfer ha-ha! My new companion’s name is Sister Sheffield and she should be getting here Wednesday so I'm super excited about that! Overall I have mixed feelings about transfers. ha-ha

This week was a crazy one! With meetings and thanksgiving and service it all just seemed to fly by!

On Wednesday we went over to do some service for Sister Edwards! She lives on a big lot out in the woods and the hurricane hit her pretty hard. Helping hands had already come and cut up all the big trees that had fallen, so now it's mostly just cosmetic stuff that needs to be done. She took us out to where she has this big green house that was ruined in the storm. There were hundreds of plant pots scattered all over the place and to start she asked us to gather all the pots and stack them on the shelves. It seemed easy enough so Sister F got started (I've been feeling super sick all week so I let her handle this one lol). We were about half way when she screamed and threw a pot. I asked her what her deal was and she told me that she saw a huge spider that she was pretty sure was a brown recluse. We examined the particular pot and sure enough it was a brown recluse about the size of my hand. We freaked out and sister f grabbed the pot with a pitchfork and threw it into the woods. We continued for a bit but decided to quit after we saw the fourth brown recluse in the pile of pots...YIKES!! It was so scary and at one point Sister F was holding a pot and there was one on the side. We had some spider PTSD for a few days. When we told Sister Edwards we weren't able to finish because of the swarm of spiders she just laughed and said, "ladies welcome to the south." It was the worst. hahaha

The pots and the pitchfork

Thursday was Thanksgiving and it was the best day of my mission so far. This is a long story so brace your selves. Normally in our mission elders and sisters aren't allowed to eat at the same house, but for Thanksgiving we were allowed to so we made a deal with the elders that if anyone invited us over we would just ask if the other set could come too. It worked out perfectly and we had 4 families lined up to feed us that day. We started out having Breakfast with the Ellis family, which was super fun! After breakfast we went around with our whole district and did Thanksgiving caroling (elders idea) where we knocked on less active members doors, gave them cookies, and sang a hymn about being thankful. It was a little odd but still fun. It seemed to really brighten their day, which was awesome :) After that we headed to lunch with the Manucy family! We had a full feast that was super yummy! Sister F and I went in with a game plan. Small samples of everything and no seconds so we could eat all day long and not get sick. The elders didn't have a game plan and ate elder sized portions and got seconds lol yikes. After that we headed over to Sister Willoughby’s house. We played a mini football game in our missionary clothes, which was interesting ha-ha and then ate pie. At this point I was totally hitting the wall and ready to sleep for a solid 48 hours but we still had one more dinner to go to. We went to a family named the Lees and they are AWESOME! Their house was the highlight of the whole night. First thing when we get there Sister Lee took us outside to show us around and one of their little yappy dogs came and bit my leg. Like really hard. I was trying to play it off because they felt really bad but I was dying inside ha-ha. I had to sneak away a few times during dinner to clean off the blood so they wouldn't notice. And when we got home we called the mission nurse and she said we had to ask the Lees if their dog had all it's shots. I was super worried it would hurt their feelings or something so I made the elders do it ha-ha. I'm okay now though it's just a little flesh wound. After that fiasco we sat down to eat and the Lees said "we already ate so just the four of you will be eating" all 4 missionaries just looked at each other knowing we were so full and praying for the strength to eat another thanksgiving dinner. They dished up our plates and gave us heaping servings. They deep fried a turkey and smoked a ham and each missionary ended up with about a pound of each. It turned into a competition between Sister F and the elders to see who could finish first. (I was already a lost cause lol) After lots of deep breaths and serious concentration we all finished our plates and laid our heads down on the table to hibernate for a few years. The Lees weren't done with us though and they gave us a HUGE piece of pineapple upside down cake. About two bites into the cake Elder Ward stopped eating. Put his napkin up to his mouth...and calmly walked to the bathroom and threw up. Poor kid hahaha they shouldn't have gotten seconds at the Manucy’s. It didn't help that Brother Lee was cracking jokes about it the whole time. We were all crying we were laughing so hard. Not at him but with him. We understood his pain. A few minutes later he called out "I'm okay!! No really I feel great!" then he came out and finished eating his cake like a champ.

When you're eating 4 thanksgiving meals you have to wear a dress that hides your food baby. We asked the Elders if they had food baby suits and Elder McConkie about spit out his turkey

This email is getting super long so I'll wrap it up with one amazing gator story. Friday the Elders sent us a referral for a guy they had met downtown. They said he was super interested and that we could go see him Saturday at 4. He lived right next to one of our recent converts so it was perfect. We went over to meet him and he told us his name was Marlin! He said he was expecting the Elders again and didn't know they would be sending over the "big guns" hahaha. We thought that was pretty funny. We taught him the restoration and it was so powerful!! He said meeting the Elders was a sign to him that God wants him to change his current path in life. He wants us to come back and teach his whole family! Before we left he said "God reaches out to us through other people, and I know you are God’s people and that he sent you to me so I'm taking this all very seriously." SO AWESOME!

We went at 6am this morning to play Frisbee as a district! We also had scooters and roller skates that we took to the skate park hahaha it was super fun! We asked the elders why they were making those faces and they said, "These are our skate park faces. You have to be serious at the skate park."

God is so good and I'm so excited to work with the amazing people in St. Augustine for another transfer!!! I know we will continue to see so many miracles! I love being a missionary!

I love y'all!! Have a blessed week <3

My emotional support kitty. Sister f and I tried to sneak it home in our bags but the member noticed :/

-Weekly Moss Moment

Friday we went to the bank to take in all the change Sister F has been collecting over her mission. She had a huge bag that was heavy and she didn't want to take it with her so we went to exchange it for cash. We figured they would use some counting machine or something but they gave us rolls and told us to go put the coins in them and come back. It was the end of a long day and we weren't thinking so we just put the coins in not realizing you were supposed to count them first to make sure the amounts lined up with what it said in the roll. The lady behind the counter was like "none of these are even...did y'all even count them?" Sister F and I just looked at each other and were like uhhhh so we had to go back and redo it. Super embarrassing...I blame it on the dang moss!!!

President’s Favorite district. Sadly we are saying goodbye to Sister Brian, Sister F, and our STL Sister Gibb :'( I'll miss them a lot.

101 Days Later

Oneta’s son Jay. He's wild but so cute!! He reminds me a lot of my nephew Jackson! He loves red trucks and dinosaurs.

Hello everyone!!

Yesterday I hit 100 days of being a missionary, which is crazy!! I'm not sure how the time is flying by so fast!!! It's also starting to get cold here which I was not prepared for lol! We teach a lot of lessons outside and most evenings we are like shivering. I even wore a scarf one night. What the heck?

This week we were able to work a lot with our investigator Karli! She's a young mom and is really excited about the church! We were able to see her twice and the first lesson we talked a lot about the Book of Mormon and read some with her. She said she loves it and looks forward to reading it every night, which is a miracle. She has so much faith it's awesome. We went and taught her again on Thursday and we were able to bring some awesome members with us! Karli loved them and really opened up to them! Before we could start the lesson she told us she had been praying about baptism and got the strong feeling she should be baptized as soon as possible so she can go to the temple to do work for her family. WE WERE SO EXCITED! We will be working with her a lot these next few weeks to make sure she's ready but I love her so much!!

We had about 30min left of pday and didn't know what to do so we went and got soda from sonic and walked around bed bath and beyond lol. Turns out they have wifi and massage chairs so we were very happy. Hahahaha

Another awesome investigator we have right now is named Ginny. She used to meet with missionaries a lot a few years ago and we saw her teaching record and decided to go visit her to see if she was interested in meeting again and she ended up being the sweetest lady ever!!! she invited us back and we've had two lessons with her since! She has the cutest kids that are 2 and 5 so we love going over to her house haha. Last time we were over her son Daniel (the 2yr old) came into the kitchen and said "I love you mommy, and I loves yous twos too" and pointed at me and sister f...our hearts melted hahaha but we are so excited to teach her! She has been reading the Book of Mormon and really just has a strong desire to strengthen her faith in Christ! We are going over Wednesday night and she is feeding us dinner so we are really excited! Hopefully we can get her to come to church soon :)

Sister f and a less active church member named Sister Vandyke. She is such a hoot and we LOVE visiting her!! It took about 20min but Sister f convinced her to take a picture hahaha

One last investigator story.... I don't know if y'all remember Thomasina...she's the super sweet 92yr old lady I mentioned visiting a few emails ago and I sent a picture of us with her...well we went and saw her this week and she is reading the Book of Mormon and agreed to be baptized. 92 years old and she is a progressing...it's insane! MIRACLES!! We are going back to teach her this week so hopefully she keeps reading and keeps progressing!

Wednesday night we had the opportunity to have dinner with a less active member named Sister Edwards. We had been trying to visit her for a really long time and finally this week it worked out. As soon as we got there and walked into her house I was transported back to NM. I'm not sure how but her house seriously smelled just like my moms house (a mix of essential oils and natural grocers) and I never wanted to leave hahaha! She made us really yummy curry soup and told us all about her travels around the world. She's basically the coolest person ever and we are going back this week to make gluten free pie for thanksgiving! It's so fun finding new investigators and teaching people but it's also SO fun to bond with the members! Sister Edwards is like my mission mom

"Sister let's take a funny picture!!"

Last night we went over to visit one of our recent converts named Oneta. We helped her with some of her family history and then she taught us how to make authentic Jamaican stew. It was sooo yummy but she always gives us HUGE servings...sister f and I always joke that once we eat half of what's on our plate we have to start saying silent prayers that we will be able to keep eating haha! It's a struggle sometimes! We love spending time with Oneta though!! She teaches us Jamacain hymns and how to cook and she has the cutest son named Jay! While we were waiting for the food to finish cooking I was sitting on the floor playing with jay and he was like jumping all over me and kicking me and trying to like wrestle and he's crazy haha but then at the end of the night when we were washing the dishes he came up and wrapped his arms around my legs and said "I love this sister" hahaha it was so cute!!!

Grandma Magleby's sugar cookies!

Today for pday we are making cookies and bread that we can deliver throughout the week to people that don't have family or anyone to celebrate thanksgiving with. It'll be a really fun service project and we also get to eat some yummy food so it'll be a good time!!

I'm so thankful for all of you and the love and support I've received! I'm thankful for my family. I'm thankful for the opportunity to be a missionary. I'm thankful for my Savior Jesus Christ!! I hope y'all have an awesome thanksgiving! eat some extra pumpkin pie for me

Have a blessed week!!

xoxo

The 30 min of exercise time in the morning has really been making a difference (Sister f laughed at this for a solid 15min)

We had a turkey bowl with our district and it was super fun! I jumped up to grab the ball and I came down and landed on top of sister f and we fell down to the ground hahaha it was pretty funny

We also got matching district shirts!! Wahooo St. Augustine district is the best!!!

Our serious team picture. Football is serious

I was talking mom's sugar cookies up to everyone all week, luckily they turned out awesome and everyone loved them. BEST COOKIES IN THE WORLD!

"Proclaim my gospel as with the voice of a TRUMP"

Is it too soon to make trump jokes? .... I’m sorry haha

Hello everyone!!! Another crazy busy week here in St Augustine!

This week we had the opportunity to have a general authority (a leader in our church) come and give us some training in a zone conference. We had to drive about 45 min to meet with our zone and 2 other zones from other parts of the mission! There ended up being about 100 other missionaries there and it was super cool to be around that many missionaries!! During the conference we talked a lot about our work and what we can do better!

MTC REUNION!!! I got to see Sister Hardy and Sister Ulrich at zone conference this last week! It was so fun to see my friends and talk about our areas/how life has been since we got to the mission.

During the conference we also talked about the church's Christmas initiative for this year and we got to watch the video the church will be releasing on thanksgiving for the Holiday Season. It was so cool to sit and watch the video and just feel the spirit fill the room...I’M SO EXCITED FOR CHRISTMAS AHH!! But the videos main theme (spoiler alert) was that Christ is the light of the world and that we can be that light too as we strive to follow him and serve those around us. It was super awesome! I just love Jesus and I am so thankful for him and I love this time of year because it's all about him and focusing on him! It's the light that makes all the difference!

All of our investigators are doing so amazing! We have two baptisms scheduled for the end of November and two set for early December! We have seen so many miracles these last few weeks and I know the Lord is so aware of these people and is preparing them to hear our message!

One awesome experience we had...we were teaching one of our new investigators named Jerome. He really wants to be baptized, so in the second lesson we decided to cover the word of wisdom. We told him that God wants us to respect our bodies and take care of them, and that he would have to give up smoking if he wanted to be baptized. He sat and thought for a moment, pulled his cigarettes out of his pocket and handed them to me right then and there.... SO MUCH FAITH! We saw him about 4 days later and he said that he hasn't bought any more!! It was such a miracle! He said there're times where it's been hard but he wants so badly to follow what the Lord wants him to do and I love seeing his faith grow. God is SO good.

Update on Jackie...as of two days ago she is up to 2 Nephi 14, which is almost 100 pages into the Book of Mormon...WHICH IS CRAZY!! She has two little kids and she's crazy busy and she still makes reading a priority! She is the sweetest thing ever and I love her so much! She's golden.

I found these sunglasses in our car one night and decided I was going to wear them out tracting even though it was getting dark. I thought it was pretty funny but Sister f was obviously not amused hahaha.

We also met the mayor of kooksville this week. There're a lot of lovable kooks in Florida (we blame it on the moss). We were sitting outside visiting with a less active member when this lady walked up and started talking to us. She was sweet but was saying the craziest things some of which included that she has a bachelors in political science, sociology, psychiatry and a masters in political science so she's very smart. She told us she is a vegetarian because it says in the bible not to eat anything with eyes. She told us to look it up but I have not been able to do my fact checking yet. She said she eats fish if it doesn't have eyes. She told us several times she has the body of a goddess. She has some boyfriend she kept talking about but she never said his name she just kept referring to him as "the Russian". She had just bought a tent and was going to go live with her friends behind Publix. She was just sitting with us and we were trying to visit with the member and she would randomly interrupt us to say "I'm very smart." or "I used to be a teacher. They loved me." Random stuff like that.  She told us she has very special blood and that doctors think she's an alien and that it's also the blood Jesus had. She told us to Google it. She then asked us for money and when we said we didn't have any she kissed our heads and walked off. The member was awesome and offered her a Book of Mormon before she left. hahaha it was interesting!

Monday's are the best because we go get bagels at Panera so we can use the wifi to email. chowing down on my bagel now.

This week will be 3 months in St. Augustine and it’s overwhelming to think of all the miracles I have seen and I have loved growing as a missionary here. The people are so kind and I have seen so much faith from everyone in the short amount of time I’ve been here. This all reminded me of one of my favorite scriptures in Alma 26:12 which says;

“Yea, I know that I am nothing; as to my strength I am weak; therefore I will not boast of myself, but I will boast of my God, for in his strength I can do all things; yea, behold, many mighty miracles we have wrought in this land, for which we will praise his name forever.”

I am so weak. I see those weaknesses everyday. I'm thankful for my Savior Jesus Christ and the opportunity that I have to go to him and pray for that strength to be better and to work harder. We have miracles every single day but I know it has nothing to do with us. I love sharing this message of hope, peace, and JOY with the people of Florida!! Being a missionary is the greatest thing ever.

I love y'all so much! I hope you have a blessed week :)

xoxo
